The original plan for Asus Eee PC 900 in Japan is to have a single MLC 16GB SSD, and it seems to be too slow for the Japanese. So instead of dealing with irate customers coming back and complaining, AsusTek anticipated it with their last minute initiative. The 16GB SSD will be replaced with two 8GB SSD but only one of them will be SLC (faster) type. Despite this, it’s still a big difference in terms of performance and speed.

The difference is huge: 8GB SLC is 35/28 read/write where 16GB MLC is 30/8, according to jkkmobile.com. jkk is the most famous blogger in terms of providing netbook anatomy and hacks.

The launch in Japan market is postponed to September 20.

For some of you who are in doubt about which is better between the 2 netbooks, here are some ideas that might be of help.

Performance wise, Dell Inspiron Mini 9 might outdo the Asus Eee PC 900. Inspiron sports 1.6Ghz Intel Atom while the Eee PC 900 uses 900Mhz Celeron. Since Atom consumes lesser power than Celeron, Inspiron has an advantage on this side as well.

In terms of Graphics, Inspiron has the Intel GMA 950 chipset while the Eee PC 900 has the Intel GMA 900. So it’s clear that Inspiron wins this side as well. Though I guess that it won’t be that BIG issue here.

The Eee PC’s main defense against the Inspiron Mini 9 is definitely the cheaper price, $399 vs $474. Not if you will buy Studio 15, XPS M1530 or XPS M1330 laptop through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 (U.S. only) because the Inspiron will then cost $99.

The Eee PC 900 is a bit lighter and smaller than Inspiron. Just a bit. In terms of other specs, such as the webcam, USB ports, screen sizes, etc… both netbooks almost are very similar.

Gigabyte 9 seems to get special attention from some bloggers during the Intel Atom Launch in the Philippines. Well, who would not pay attention to this shiny netbook that transforms to a tablet? Gigabyte 9 features 8.9 Touchscreen LCD, 1.6GHz Intel Atom, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, WiFi, Bluetooth, option for 3G/HSDPA, with 1.3MP webcam. No words on price and release date yet but it looks it would have higher marks compare to ordinary eee pc. Visit Abe’s post for more Gigabyte 9 pictures.

According to Jon, all issues listed here has been fixed. Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 RC2 is now ready for download.

It’s been officially announced that the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 will be available in the Philippines this coming October. Prices are not yet disclosed but Yuga has given some hints that it will be retailed under Php 25,000 mark. This netbook sports the following specs:

2.2lbs
Atom 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM and 16GB SSD
Windows XP Home with an 8.9-inch display screen (1024×600 pixel resolution)
Bluetooth
1.3MP Webcam
Built-in WiFi

The official launch in the Philippines is happening in September 17. I will be there.

I’m really excited for the Ubuntu Eee Gold release and I’m particularly happy about the team addressing the bugs being found. There’s not as lots of bugs reported compared to other software around though. Few more days I guess, and we can have a taste of the perfected Ubuntu Eee. It’s still going for Gold.

There’s a company in Germany (Nova Media) that offers a helpful software called “launch2net for Linux” to do the configuration part for your 3G modem/phone. The pack is exclusively for Linux but the weird thing is that it’s not free. Why would you opt to pay for this while setting up 3G on Linux (esp. Xandros), is not too hard to do?

When initially introduced, Shuttle claims the lowest price a Nettop could have ($189, Asus Eee Box gets a good competitor.). At first I got excited, kind-of, because I know I would be able to avail one for myself and another one maybe. But then I learned it won’t have anything on that price. Put altogether the required components with atom-based processor and it will eat up $500 from your pocket. That’s too expensive now.
